What is a peer support specialist?
​
- A Peer Support Specialist is a person with "lived experience" who has been professionally trained to support those who struggle with co-occurring disorders.
​
- Through shared understanding, respect, and mutual empowerment, peer support specialists help clients become and stay engaged in the recovery process and reduce the likelihood of relapse.
​
-The peer related programs offer a wide variety of support to members of the community and access to care.

Healthy Beginnings
Healthy Beginnings Program supports prenatal and postnatal mothers though the process of recovery and motherhood.

Health Equity Programs
Healthy Equity Programs assists clients after discharge from the CalvertHealth Medical Center by facilitating and coordinating behavioral health care needs. In addition, assist unsheltered individuals with locating and applying for housing through care coordination.

Criminal Justice Program
The peer that works within the the Calvert County Detention Center (CCDC) conducts groups in which topics can range from educating incarcerated individuals about peer support, the four domains of peer support and the various paths to recovery. Additionally, the peer assigned to this program works closed with the Drug Court through the Calvert County Circuit Court.

Calvert Crisis Response
Our peer recovery specialists are individuals that are in longterm recovery. They provide a unique perspective to treatment and help to empower others in their recovery journey. Providing unparalleled advocacy and guidance, peer recovery specialists help to navigate through crises and help to set goals for recovery.

Harm Reduction Program
Harm reduction team (HRT), participates in daily outreach and engages directly with individuals in an active addiction to prevent overdose and infectious disease transmission; to improve physical, mental and social well-being; and offer low barrier options for accessing health care services and behavioral health needs. HRT peers align on meeting people where they are and respecting the choice of the individual from a non-bias perspective. Peers instill the importance of safer use and provide clear direction towards the recovery process.
